Cloud Gate

Moving back to Chicago was never a plan of mine, but I find that there are endless compensations. Mostly pastries. There’s also something inarticulably lovely about being able to choose to spend one’s lunch hour looking at world-famous paintings or instagram-famous sculpture.

Construction on Cloud Gate began the very month Facebook sprang into existence. It opened two years later, less than 60 days after Twitter began tweeting. Did anyone anticipate how timely Anish Kapoor’s sculpture would be? What could better encapsulate the past ten years than a massive, reflective surface—one which could be used to obtain a broader scope of the viewer’s surroundings, but that people mostly use to gaze at themselves?
